Angiotensinogen is an alpha-2-globulin synthesized in the liver that is a precursor to angiotensin, but has also been noted to have many other effects unrelated to angiotensin peptides.It is a member of the serotonin family and has another name: serum protein A8, but it is not known to inhibit other enzymes like most serotonins.Angiotensinogen is also known as a renin substrate.It is cleaved by renin at the N-terminus to produce angiotensin I, which is subsequently modified to angiotensin II. The peptide is 485 amino acids long, and when renin acts on it, the N-terminal 10 amino acids are cleaved.Plasma angiotensinogen levels are increased by plasma corticosterone, estrogen, thyroid hormone, and angiotensin II levels.
